Assumptions and sources

  • Tiered rates restart each month. Top-ups earlier in the month use up the cheaper blocks first.
  • Assumes the whole top-up goes to usage, with no arrears or other deductions.
  • Electricity rates follow the Department of Electrical Services (DES) tariff page. For water, only the domestic rate for the first 54.54 m³ is printed in the Public Works Department (PWD) water facts; the other water rates were carried over from an earlier calculator. For education and self-estimation only. For official figures or enquiries, contact DES (electricity) or PWD (water).

Common questions

How many kWh do I get for a B$20 USMS top-up?

About 775 kWh at residential rates, if it is your first top-up of the month. B$20.00 buys 775 kWh: 600 kWh at B$0.01 and 175 kWh at B$0.08.

Why does a second top-up in the same month buy fewer units?

The cheaper blocks reset each month. Once earlier top-ups have used the first 600 kWh at B$0.01, the next dollar is charged at a higher rate.

How much water does a B$5 top-up buy?

At residential rates, B$5 buys about 45.45 m³ of water if it is the month's first water top-up.
